At its May 12 regular meeting, the Duarte City Council proudly recognized Amy Hai as the 2026 Senior Volunteer of the Year in celebration of Older Americans Month. Observed each May nationally and led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), Older Americans Month recognizes the many contributions older adults make to communities across the country while also highlighting aging trends and the importance of supporting healthy, active lifestyles. This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” emphasizes prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging.
Amy was honored for her outstanding dedication and continued service to the Duarte community through her volunteer work at the Duarte Senior Center. Originally from Canada, Amy moved to Duarte in 2009 and soon began volunteering at the Senior Center, assisting at the front desk and supporting the Senior Lunch Program kitchen. Her willingness to help wherever needed and her warm, welcoming presence have made a meaningful impact on City staff, visitors, and fellow seniors alike.
“Amy’s kindness and dedication have made a meaningful impact at our Senior Center,” said Senior Center Supervisor Alexis Corral. “She truly leads with compassion and has become such an important part of our senior community. Through her work in the kitchen, she always brings warmth and positivity to those around her.”
When asked why she volunteers, Amy shared that her faith has taught her to care for others with love and that helping people is both her purpose and something she genuinely enjoys.
“On behalf of the City of Duarte, we proudly recognize Amy for her outstanding dedication and consistent service in the Senior Lunch Program kitchen, helping nourish and support our community,” said Mayor Tera Martin del Campo. “Her efforts embody this year’s Older Americans Month theme by promoting wellness and connection among older adults. We express our deepest appreciation for her active involvement in enhancing the lives of others.”
