At its regular meeting on August 25, the Duarte City Council proudly recognized Luis Romero for his bravery during a World Cup watch party in Los Angeles. 

On Thursday, June 18, 2026, Mr. Romero was attending the South Korea vs. Mexico watch party in Koreatown, Los Angeles when an armed suspect opened fire near the crowd. As people fled to safety, Mr. Romero made the courageous decision to intervene and attempt to disarm the gunman to prevent many others from being injured. 

While tackling the gunman, Mr. Romero was shot in the leg and severed an artery. Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Officers immediately arrived at the scene to apply a tourniquet to the wound, and provide critical lifesaving care until he could be transported to the hospital. As of now, Mr. Romero is going through the recovery process, working to regain mobility and strength amid the injuries he sustained. 

“Mr. Romero’s instinctual decision to tackle and disarm the gunman prevented injuries that day, said Mayor Tera Martin Del Campo. “We are honored to recognize your extraordinary act of altruism.”

The City of Duarte extends its deepest appreciation to Luis Romero for his courage and selflessness, and to the first responders and medical personnel who helped him survive and begin his recovery.
